My Other Job! (With Cake Pix Of Course!)

Hello! It's been a while!

I haven't been updating as often last year cause my old job was really demanding... I didn't have free time to do other stuff or make cakes, I realized I missed out on many things and I missed making cakes, so I started to think about what I can do all over again.... I either get started now or never.

I wanted a full time job, but I didn't have to work so many hours . I need more time for cakes!
I know what you're thinking, but trust me, a job like this exists lol.

It was around August, I started getting the idea of being a Flight Attendant full time (only work 70-80 hours a month), perfect! If I can fit in a part time supply teaching job for the school board (only two days a week), that would be awesome!  Weekends I can make cakes....

I'd have to see if both jobs are hiring, and apply, and somehow convince them to hire me. It was a long shot.

So, just my luck, in August AC was hiring, I applied and didn't get a call back but I didn't give up, I applied again in September and they called me back!.. I was also lucky to catch the York Region School Board website on a day they posted hiring ads for supply work, normally they'll post it up and within a week they'll have enough submissions and they'll take it down.  I got called in for in person interviews for both places,  after many interviews, a medical test, exams, and training.. 5 months later, I got both jobs!

I passed the AC training and started flying first week of February.
I'll be on the supply list second week of March.

Every thing is coming together! I am so incredibly happy!
It's kind of crazy how I'm a Flight Attendant now,
I always knew I wanted to teach, but flying never crossed my mind...
I've flew a few times already, and I love it!

Anyways, here are some pictures from my FA graduation.

I didn't take any cake orders for 2 months so I could focus on training,
I really missed caking so for our graduation, I made our phase a cake!

This cake was what we saw for the entire month of training, a messy desk.

A close up of the sticky notes, says Thank You to our wonderful instructors!

The cake compared to the real manuals.

Me with my cake at grad.

That's my instructor, his girlfriend made the airplane cake!

Our grad night celebration.

I wasn't ready, but the girls look gorgeous here!

I met T at my very first interview! I then saw her at the group interview,
medical test, etc, and we ended up in the same class... we'll be flying together
to Tampa end of March! From day 1 to flying together .

So that's what I've been up to. I have so much free time now, excited to start blogging and caking again!

Spawn Cake! Superhero Cake!

Here it is, a SPAWN CAKE!
Okay, to be honest, I've never watched the movie before...
I'm not big on action/superhero movies.
(But I do have a thing for Thor... ;) )
So I stared at the image of Spawn for quite some time
before I felt confident enough to mold the superhero.
I should have used modelling chocolate,
but I was short on one ingredient and it was late in the night,
so I went ahead and used fondant and gumpaste to mold the figurine.
It took a lot of time, but I thought it turned out really nice :)
This is one of my favourite cakes this year!

This is a before picture of the finished figurine.
I was letting the fondant dry after using the steamer over it.
I still had to add in the details.

Here is a close up of Spawn.

More Cake Updates, Thanks to Iphone Apps!

I finally switched over to iphone from blackberry! There's definitely some things that I liked about
the blackberry that the iphone didn't have, but the camera on the iphone made me switch over!

I can finally post my cake pictures RIGHT AWAY, not a few days or weeks after lol.
I've been using Instagram and Snapeee and PicCollage to post my cake pictures :)
I'm trying to hold back on the cute deocrations from Snapeee... it's making my
cake pictures too busy looking, but I'm addicted to the app!

Here are some of my recent Instagrams and Snapees :)

Fondant Decorating: Thomas The Train birthday cake video!

Hey everyone! Here's a Thomas the Train Engine birthday cake I made for a little boy name Zahran who
just turned 2 over the weekend! Terrible Twos maybe.. but I think Two is the best age, the cutest!

His mammy said he's a huge Thomas and friends fan of the tv show, so she requested a Thomas the Train
birthday cake for the little boy.  Last year, I made them the Winnie The Pooh cake with a bee hive
(the mammy allowed me to design however I wanted to), so this year, I wanted to recreate something
that's one of a kind.  She wanted a 3D sculpted cake of Thomas the Train, but that's been done before,
so I added a mountain at the back, and it gave the cake more character, Thomas the Train looks more a live :)

I love it when they give me the free reign in designing, I enjoy doing it more, and there's no
limit to creativity :)

Fondant Decorating: Angry Birds CAKE!

ANGRY BIRDS CAKE!

Here's a quick video of a small Angry Birds cake I made for a friend's son's birthday.

I have to say, I was a huge Angry Bird addict on the iphone and ipad at one point myself lol, but I was never good at that game :D.
Anyways, I am finally gaining more free time so I will be updating more often, blog soon :)

Fondant Cake Decorating: More Cakes!

Here's a quick update of 4 more cake photos!
Grrr.. I have so  many cake photos on my camera, but no time to
upload and watermark them yet.  The day job hours are still really long.

I'll upload more soon!

Here's a baby bum cake, the cake design was inspired by a onesie that'a already been
bought for the baby.  Luckily I had similar dinosaur cutters I could use and just slightly modify,
or it would've taken hours to custom cut all the dinosaurs!

This is a birthday cake for a girl with four of the Disney characters.  She wanted the
cake to be colourful so this is what I came up with.  Not too girly :)

This cake was made for Stacey Johnson's new book launch event.  Stacey wanted an edible
replica of her book on top of the cake, I threw in some other elements.. the collar of her shirt she's wearing
in the book cover, and her name in braids.  She's a hair stylist and author.

My Cake Update!

Hey everyone :)

Here are some of the cake orders from Jan/Feb.
I've been super busy the past few months and a lot of my cakes
were made without a photo taken, so I'm so glad I even have these photos!

Anyways, hope you like them :)

Baby shower mini cupcakes, with a baby and bumble bee theme.

Close up of the bumble bee mini cupcakes.

Chinese New Year cupcakes! This was for my friend's wedding.

Soccer, Coca Cola, Cohiba Cigar, Manchester United.. themed cake!

Christmas, Birthday and Eyesore Monster cupcakes!

A simple black and white with flowers design.

Mickey Mouse cake for a baby shower.

I think this is the best Mickey Mouse I've made.

Nightmare Before Christmas Cake.  I still need to watch the movie!

A Dr. Seuss' Cat in the Hat themed cake.

That's all for now, I need to make sure there's enough time after the cake is done for photos.
Will post more photos up soon :)

Fondant Decorating: Cute Animal Cake

Hey guys!

This was a cake made for a little girl's 2nd birthday celebration.  I didn't come up with the design actually, my friend had sent me an image she found online and I made a replica of the 2 tier cake.

I cut out all the shapes first before icing and covering the cake with fondant.  It gave it some time for the 2D fondant shapes to harden.  With this kind of "cut and paste 2D shape" style, the fondant is easier to work with when it's a little hard.

Make sure you poke the dots immediately after you cut the shape, if you allow the fondant to dry a bit before dotting it, it can crack.

Rolling out the light blue fondant to cover the cake.

Inserting the dowels for support inside the cake.

The second tier is on.

Starting to 'glue' the shapes onto the cake.  (It's sunrise!)

Cutting the animals free hand.  I had recently bought myself a second exacto knife.  It made life so much easier, I should've bought two when I first started making cakes.

I had kneaded in gum trach powder into the coloured fondant, so they were drying almost three times as fast, I should've worked with one colour first, when I had all my shapes cut out with the yellow.. the pink was already too hard to work with by the time I was done with the yellow.  Next time, one colour at a time.

If there's a faster way to cut small triangles, let me know.  There has to be a faster way!

All my shapes are ready to be 'glued' onto the cake.

Don't let the shapes harden/dry too long, they had to be hard enough to use, but still soft enough to bend without cracking.  They had to be 'glued' onto the cake with a slight bend to hug the cake.

Edible black marker to draw in the details.

The cake is coming together.

All the fondant decorations are on.

The final touch, a green beaded border.  This mold is a life saver, I used to spend an hour rolling mini balls haha.

The finished product! I normally don't like copying a cake from an image,
but this cake is cute, and it did give me new ideas to cake design.

Hope you guys like it :)
