Fondant Cake Decorating: More Cakes!

Here's a quick update of 4 more cake photos!
Grrr.. I have so  many cake photos on my camera, but no time to
upload and watermark them yet.  The day job hours are still really long.

I'll upload more soon!

Here's a baby bum cake, the cake design was inspired by a onesie that'a already been
bought for the baby.  Luckily I had similar dinosaur cutters I could use and just slightly modify,
or it would've taken hours to custom cut all the dinosaurs!

This is a birthday cake for a girl with four of the Disney characters.  She wanted the
cake to be colourful so this is what I came up with.  Not too girly :)

This cake was made for Stacey Johnson's new book launch event.  Stacey wanted an edible
replica of her book on top of the cake, I threw in some other elements.. the collar of her shirt she's wearing
in the book cover, and her name in braids.  She's a hair stylist and author.

My Cake Update!

Hey everyone :)

Here are some of the cake orders from Jan/Feb.
I've been super busy the past few months and a lot of my cakes
were made without a photo taken, so I'm so glad I even have these photos!

Anyways, hope you like them :)

Baby shower mini cupcakes, with a baby and bumble bee theme.

Close up of the bumble bee mini cupcakes.

Chinese New Year cupcakes! This was for my friend's wedding.

Soccer, Coca Cola, Cohiba Cigar, Manchester United.. themed cake!

Christmas, Birthday and Eyesore Monster cupcakes!

A simple black and white with flowers design.

Mickey Mouse cake for a baby shower.

I think this is the best Mickey Mouse I've made.

Nightmare Before Christmas Cake.  I still need to watch the movie!

A Dr. Seuss' Cat in the Hat themed cake.

That's all for now, I need to make sure there's enough time after the cake is done for photos.
Will post more photos up soon :)

Fondant Decorating: Cute Animal Cake

Hey guys!

This was a cake made for a little girl's 2nd birthday celebration.  I didn't come up with the design actually, my friend had sent me an image she found online and I made a replica of the 2 tier cake.

I cut out all the shapes first before icing and covering the cake with fondant.  It gave it some time for the 2D fondant shapes to harden.  With this kind of "cut and paste 2D shape" style, the fondant is easier to work with when it's a little hard.

Make sure you poke the dots immediately after you cut the shape, if you allow the fondant to dry a bit before dotting it, it can crack.

Rolling out the light blue fondant to cover the cake.

Inserting the dowels for support inside the cake.

The second tier is on.

Starting to 'glue' the shapes onto the cake.  (It's sunrise!)

Cutting the animals free hand.  I had recently bought myself a second exacto knife.  It made life so much easier, I should've bought two when I first started making cakes.

I had kneaded in gum trach powder into the coloured fondant, so they were drying almost three times as fast, I should've worked with one colour first, when I had all my shapes cut out with the yellow.. the pink was already too hard to work with by the time I was done with the yellow.  Next time, one colour at a time.

If there's a faster way to cut small triangles, let me know.  There has to be a faster way!

All my shapes are ready to be 'glued' onto the cake.

Don't let the shapes harden/dry too long, they had to be hard enough to use, but still soft enough to bend without cracking.  They had to be 'glued' onto the cake with a slight bend to hug the cake.

Edible black marker to draw in the details.

The cake is coming together.

All the fondant decorations are on.

The final touch, a green beaded border.  This mold is a life saver, I used to spend an hour rolling mini balls haha.

The finished product! I normally don't like copying a cake from an image,
but this cake is cute, and it did give me new ideas to cake design.

Hope you guys like it :)

Fondant Decorating: SUSHI CUPCAKES!

Someone had asked me to make birthday cupcakes for a good friend of his, and the design was
completely up to me.  So I asked for some suggestions, what does she like? He said she's Japanese
so do something cute and Japanese related.  He suggested anime cartoon but then I thought
sushi cupcakes would be even cuter!

He was really happy when he came by to pick up the cupcakes!

She said she took a million pictures before eating them haha.
Exactly what I do, take a million pictures before I give them away!

I've seen many versions of Sushi Cupcakes online, this is my own version :)

Fondant Cake Decorating: Mahjong Cakes!

I made a set of Mahjong tile cakes for my friend.

The most challenging part was cutting and making sure all the cakes were the same size.  I was at the cake store recently and saw the rectangular cake dividers and didn't buy it, yep I was kicking myself for that! Took me about two hours to cut all 14 cakes and ice them. I had to make sure they were all the same size and all the angles were perpendicular. If any one of them were slanted, it would be obvious.

I made vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream.  A good way to see if your cakes are the same size is to use the negative space left from the cake board. I made sure the silver border was roughly half an inch on all four sides. The 14 cakes were not the same height so I used buttercream to add a bit of height to some of them to make them all the same.

To make sure the angles are all perpendicular, I had to freeze the cake after each buttercream coating, this took most of the two hours.

I rolled out the white fondant and covered each tile. When you're working with a square/rectangular cake, always smooth out the corners first.

Trim away the excess fondant and smooth it with the fondant smoother.  When you work with square/rectangular cakes, it's easier to smooth the cake with two smoothers.

I made some green fondant with Leaf Green edible colouring, rolled it out (thinner than the white fondant) and cut it with the ribbon cutter.

I attached it to the cake with water.  You can see there isn't much of the silver cake board border left.  Be very careful when you place the cakes together in the box after, I had two of them touching and I had to redo the green layer.

All 14 are covered with fondant and ready to be painted!

You only get one shot at this, so don't make a mistake lol. I'm Chinese but I never had to write Chinese characters.. so this was super difficult! I've had to paint Chinese characters for other cakes before,. This is what I do...I paint the character with a thin line and then go back and thicken the line where it needs to be thickened as if you're the character was painted with a brush.. think of the character as a picture, and try to center it by looking at the negative spaces.

I used the thinnest paint brush I have.  I don't use cake painting brushes, the quality isn't there.  I get brushes from Curry's Art store, they have wide selection of style and sizes.
Okay so I did the easiest character first to warm up lol. It's probably best to do the hardest one now and get that over with lol.  This is the 'love' character. Thank goodness I didnt make a mistake. (I should've made an extra cake incase I did though!)

Here's all of them together :) So instead of the usual tiles for the 'pair of eyes', my friend wanted to use the character 'love'. So sweet!

That's my blackberry on the table to show the size of the cakes. My friend thought they would each be the size of the actual tile lol, I made them way too big haha.
