how to make a minion figurine cake topper

MINIONS! I love them! They were the best part of the Despicable Me movies, so glad they finally have their own movie! I've always loved receiving Minion cake orders, hope I get to make some more this year now that their movie is coming out.

This is probably my most popular Despicable Me Minion cake.
This pink design with the middle minion picking off the daisy petals.
"She loves me, she loves me now".

I've made a minion tutorial to show you how I make my minion figurines for cake toppers.  If you scale the minion  figurine a bit smaller, you can also follow the tutorial to make minion figurines for cupcakes as well.
In this tutorial, I made 3 different minions to show you different styles to make... short, tall, with standing legs or sitting legs, and no legs, different eye exprssions and hair styles too.

How To Use Tappit Cutters, Letters and Numbers. - Fondant Decorating DIY

how to get fondant letters out of tappits tutorial cutters

Tappit Cutters! Pros... I love the font, some cake designs look better overall with the tappit cutters lowercase or upper case.  Cons... they can be intimidating to use, many times I hear of bakers (from all sorts of skill levels) have trouble using them. I remember wanting to pull my hair out the first time I tried to use them. It happens to all of us!

What makes tappit cutters challenging to use, is how skinny the fondant letters and numbers are.  They can be easily twisted and deformed by the slightest touch.  Tweezers, exacto knives and toothpicks don't seem to help.

I've tried many different methods of getting fondant letters out, here I'm gonna show you the best, easiest, fastest way in getting the fondant letters out.

The trick is to have your fondant rolled very thin and air dry it a bit.  So roll it as thin as you can, and then let it sit for a few minutes.  It won't work if your fondant is too soft or sticky.  So if you just colored your fondant, let it air out for a few minutes.

I find the more stiff and dry the fondant is, the easier it is for me to get the fondant letters and numbers out.

I've made a tutorial video showing you how I do it, watch it here:

How to get fondant letters out of tappit cutters

1. Roll out the fondant as thin is you can, it needs to be thinner than the height of the cutter (which isn't very high of course).

2. Dust the cutter with cornstarch and powder sugar mix.
(While working with fondant, I have a bowl with half powder sugar and half cornstarch mixed together. I use it to powder the area/cutters/rolling pin to prevent fondant from sticking.)

3. Press the letter cutter firmly into the fondant, then press onto it and 'rub' it back and forth a bit, this would ensure it's pressed all the way through and the extra fondant is cut off.

4. If there's any extra fondant, for example, the negative spaces in a letter B or O, or P etc.. use a toothpick or exacto knife to pick it out.

5. Form a fist with your hand, place the fist behind the cutter and tap the cutter against the edge of a table.

6. The letter or number should pop right out.

How to make Hiro from Big Hero 6 Figurine Tutorial

diy how to make big hero 6 figurine tutorial

I'm super excited to share this tutorial with you! I've been getting a lot of requests on how to make human figurines for cake toppers.  I've actually been trying to improve my sculpting/figurines the past couple of years myself, it's never easy, I understand why people would want to see someone make one in person.  So I've recorded myself making Hiro from the movie Big Hero 6. I hope you'll find it helpful. The video is sped up to make it shorter, but the portion where I'm making the face I kept it slower so you can see.
I hope this helps!

Olaf Figurine Tutorial, how to make Olaf!

1. Materials you'll need:
- white fondant
- small clump of black fondant
- small clump of orange fondant
- small clump of brown fondant
- ball tip tool or you can use back of a paint brush
- exacto knife
- 3 toothpicks
- small roller
- thin paint brush
- edible blue color
- tylose or gumpaste powder (not shown in pic, oops!)
you'll need to knead this into the fondant before starting

2. Make white fondant into Olaf's head shape. I used the small roller and pressed that on for the top of his head, and also below his nose, to make his middle nose part more prominent. I used the tip of the roller to push in the 2 indents on both sides of his well as well. Flat part of the roller can flat/smooth the sides of his mouth.

3. Exacto knife to create the smile.

4. Use the exacto knife and cut out the smile.  It's okay if the cut isn't perfectly smooth/flat.

5. Use a ball tip tool or the back of a paint brush, and flatten the fondant inside the mouth opening.

6. Roll out a thin piece of black fondant and cut it into the shape of his mouth.

7. Add water for it to stick on, then use the ball tip tool or back of paintbrush and smooth out the black fondant.

8. Roll out a small piece of white fondant, place a plastic wrap over and use a small circle cutter to cut the eyes. The plastic wrap will smooth out the circle into a dome shape rather than a flat coin shape.

9. Glue the eyes down with water.

10. Dilute the blue color gel with a few drops of water, or vodka or lemon extract. Paint around the eyes a small border of blue.

11. With black fondant, place eye balls and eye lid onto his eyes.  For the eyelids, I pinch a but of black fondant and roll it really thin with my fingers.

12. Roll really thin brown fondant with your fingers, for eyebrows.

13. Roll really thin brown fondant into a rectangular shape. add some water inside and place a toothpick in the center. Fold the fondant over and make a straight cut beside the tooth pick.  Roll a bit of brown fondant into a thin V shape and glue it on as fingers.

14. Use white fondant to create the body parts.

15. Use black fondant and make the 3 buttons. Let the pieces dry for at least an hour to let them harden before assembling. Assemble the body parts together with a tooth pick in the core and leave a bit of tooth pick sticking out at the top of the body to add the head on.

Happy Caking everyone! <3

How To Make Fondant Sushi CAKE!

Hey everyone!

This is my time lapse cake video!! I'm making fondant sushi cake!

I remember the first time I made a fondant sushi cake was 3 years ago for my mom's birthday. I was looking online for any fondant sushi cake tutorials or cake videos and I couldn't find any, so over time I just developed my own way of making it.  This is probably my 7th or 8th fondant sushi cake so I thought I'd record it for anyone else wondering how it's made.

I hope it helps! or feel free to email me at joweelo@gmail.com if you need any help, I know how it feels googling for how to cake tutorials! It can be a pain :)

Oh, and today's my birthday :) Happy Birthday to MEEEE!

Mod Monkey Baby Shower Cake!

I'm loving my new job as a Flight Attendant! I have days off to do other things, so much freedom!
I started making cakes again, and I thought it'd be a good time now to edit this video.  I recorded myself making this cake almost a year ago (Yes, I'm a huge procrastinator when I don't give myself a deadline!), but here it is :) Finally posted up!  It's my first time making a time lapse video for a two tiered cake. It slows down the process of making the cake a lot, but I hope I make more videos like this in the future.

Hope you guys like the video!

Love you all, Joey

DRAW SOMETHING FACEBOOK, CUPCAKES!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY E!

She turned 8...
every year I make her something for her birthday,
for her first birthday, I made her baby blocks with yarn.
I can't believe that was 8 years ago.

This year, I wanted to make her a cake video,
she thinks it's "cool" mommy knows how to use YouTube lol.
I kinda do. I didn't know what kind of cake to make her,
then her Draw Something obsession started haha. That made it easy.

She plays Draw Something on facebook, she plays Draw Something on the
iphone, she plays Draw Something on the ipad, she plays it every where!!
She is addicted to Draw Something! lol.

________________________

Every morning I love asking her,
"How long have you been in my life?"

She'll reply,
"Eight."

And I'll say,
"How long have I been in your life?"

She'll laugh and say,
"Eight!"

And I'll say,
"What a coincidence!"

and then we'll both laugh our heads off,
we've been doing this since she was 3 years old,
she still finds it funny.

8 years? Really.. has it been 8 years...
She's growing up way too fast.

Play time!!!

Happy Birthday, I love you so much.
